Part of the mission statement of this blog is to provide commentary to articles and videos regarding censorship in literature. I am also compiling a multitude of sources to be held on this blog for readers to be able to access more information about this topic through this blog.
That being said, today I will be discussing the TedTalk by Gopikaashree Sampathkumar. This Youtube video works as a sort of call to action for its viewers. She discusses the severe scale in which censorship in literature has gotten to and then provides the viewers with some heart-wrenching examples that are taking place in todays time. This is a good video for someone who is first being introduced to this issue. It is very compelling and provides viewers with some context on this issue. The link to the video is down below.
If you have ever wondered why seemingly harmless books are banned, or felt like social media was unjustly censoring information, then this blog is for you. It is important to continually educate people on the disadvantages and effects of censorship. The main issue this blog will narrow in on is the banning and censoring of books from public places that make them accessible to todays youth and on. Many argue that this is done to protect rather than harm, but it is more valuable to leave these resources open for the use and learning of others. If nothing else, this blog is for educational purposes so others may know to what extent censorship is present and for others to decide if this is a problem worth fixing in their own community. The discussion around this issue is not full enough to begin to hope for change. This blog is open for discussion and differing opinions so be sure to leave any commentary below. It will be updated soon with more information and resources.
